GOD'S CONCEPT OF MINISTRY
Suppose a man has three servants waiting on him, and he says to one of them:
"Patrick, please go to the University of Jos, there is brother in the department of Economics who promised to give us a cheque for the work, collect that cheque. It is for a hundred thousand naira. On your way, go to bank, cash it and bring the cash."
He says, yes Sir." Then he calls a second servant,
"Sam, I am expecting some visitors, I do not think the toilet is clean. Please get up, clean up and place all necessary toiletries."
And finally he calls the third servant and says to him:
"John, you just stay here. Sit there. Do not go anywhere. Do not let this place be empty in case I need you."
If the first servant goes and collects the hundred thousand naira, does it make him a better servant to the Master than the third servant because he brought in money? No! He was only sent.
Moreover, the fact that he was sent to cash money today while the third was told to sit down does not make going to collect money his permanent ministry or something he can always get up at will to go and do. He has to be sent and the Master may or may not send him at another time.
Do you not think it will
again be wrong for Patrick to come back to meet the third servant saying...
"John, are you still sitting here? This is where you have been sitting whereas I have gone to the bank and collected some thousands of naira. I just thank God for the way God is using me."
That would not be right because each of them did what he was told to do. Partick would not also have the right to go into the market and spend anything out of the money since the money is not his. He cannot eat better than the other servants simply because he was the one who collected the money for the Master.
When you understand God's concept of ministry, you will know the most important thing to pursue. You will know that servants of God are not supposed to be rated high or low based on what we see them do. That is not the issue. Each man is only doing what he was told to do and to return.
There is nothing wrong with the brother that washed the toilet today. Tomorrow the master may decide to change the duties.
My preparation is to be with Him. And the only criterion by which my faithfulness will be measured is if I am at my duty post, such that any time God needs a man to use I am readily available.
